One of the challenges of parenthood is teaching children how to read. It can be a daunting task for parents to pick a program, something that makes an impact on their children’s lives. There is a myriad of options out there that promise to help children read, and Children Learning Reading is one of them.

It targets the early learning years of a child’s life and helps them develop reading capabilities at this stage. It’s only normal for parents to be cautious when selecting reading programs, as many have proven to be nothing but a scam.

This Children Learning Reading review will help you decide if it’s the best reading program for your little one.

What is the Children Learning Reading?

It is a program that emphasizes the use of phonics and phonemic awareness instruction that will teach children as young as two to three years old to read.

The age of three is an excellent age to introduce your children to reading and is an opportune time to teach them to look beyond colorful illustrations. It is at this age that their brain becomes receptive to learning new skills.

This detailed course takes 12 weeks to complete and aims to teach tiny tots how to read. It consists of two stages, each one containing a Children Learning Reading PDF. The stages are broken down into 50 structured lessons that parents and children can go through at their speed.

All lessons that went into the e-book are aimed at creating phonemic awareness in children. Phonemic awareness is important in helping children approach new and big words with relative ease. The program believes that when children become comfortable with phonemes, or the sound an alphabet makes, the next task is to string different alphabets together, learning new words and the sound these words make.

Who created the program?

The creators of Children Learning Reading are Elena and Jim Yang, the proud parents of four children. They developed the program to teach their children how to read effectively before reaching the age of three.

Jim is a veteran reading teacher who understands the importance of Phonics, the building block of learning any new language. With the program’s success, Jim Yang made it his mission to help other parents who were struggling just like him to teach their young children how to read during their free time.

Who is it for?

The program is not for young children but parents of young children aged 2-3. Parents must know that this is not a program where you just pop in a DVD and have children sit in front of the screen. Parents must be actively involved in helping their young children learn to read phonetically through a straightforward and effective program.

What’s in the program?

The program has two stages. The first stage has 28 lessons that focus on alphabets and the sound each alphabet makes. Small and simple words are eventually introduced so that young children get comfortable reading rhymes, sentences, as well as short paragraphs.

There are four video lessons that give parents a good idea of the program in action and help figure out what part parents need to play. Stage 1 is more straightforward than Stage 2, but both stages are designed to complement one another.

Stage 1 – 28 lessons

The organization of the exercises helps build the foundation of reading. Some of the most common concepts of the introductory material are sounds and alphabets. As the child progresses through each lesson, he will be able to transition smoothly into learning more complicated words, rhymes, and sentences.

Stage 2 – 22 lessons

The exercises in Stage 2 expands on the child’s recently acquired reading abilities and focus on introducing letter combinations. It also highlights many progressed letters, words, and rhymes.

A few inclusions are worksheets on letter sounds, games, common sight words, stories, rhymes, and many more. There are also trial materials that help get your children in a place where they can confidently read on their own even if you don’t subscribe to the full program.

Keep in mind that the program won’t be successful unless your child can already speak. Again, make sure that your child can already speak before you start teaching him how to read.

A complete overview of the following:

  • The basic building blocks of learning
  • Instruction for simple and advanced words
  • Simple and fun activities for practice
  • Short stories and rhymes

How will children benefit from the program?

The program targets the main areas that are important to a child’s early development: social, linguistic, neurological, educational, and psychological.

Your child’s early years are the best time to teach them new skills and encourage their brain’s development. When they grow older, they will have higher concentration levels, improved attention spans, achieve early success in academics, and have a genuine joy for developing new skills and learning. Children who develop reading abilities at an early age tend to also have better social abilities.

Is it worth getting the program?

It’s a given that working parents are busy. This leads them to opt for “learning programs” that can supposedly teach young children to read by just having them sit in front of the computer. But have you ever checked the effectiveness of constantly flashing pictures and words for your children’s development? Yes, it’s an easy way out, but it’s a waste of money if it doesn’t work.

Parents need to select the right reading method. Choosing the right reading method can spell the difference between success and failure. It’s also important to note that having children “memorize” thousands of word shapes is not an effective and sound reading method.

My personal experience with the program

Knowing that my child would learn to read by sounding out words and decoding them through phonics and phonemic awareness upped my confidence in the program. It makes more sense than having them “memorize” word shapes.

As mentioned previously, the program won’t be effective if your child doesn’t even know how to speak yet. There are instances when children might be too young to start on the program, but you can certainly help build up their phonemic awareness skills.

The creator of the program, Jim Yang, shared that even his son started learning phonemic awareness when he was a little over a year old. By the time he was 2.5 years old, he had developed excellent phonemic awareness skills.

What did I do?

I helped my child develop his skills through play and kept “learning” to a minimum. Meanwhile, my child still had the time to continue to play, grow, explore, and discover the world around him.

By the time he was a little over 2 years old, he was familiar with his alphabets and could even pronounce most of the letter sounds, which was quite impressive to me. I can tell that by having the lessons revolve around play, he was becoming an enthusiastic learner.

Does it work?

I can confidently say that Children Learning Reading works. It’s quite the feeling to see my child joyfully soaked up in his lessons. He loved the lessons in Stage 1 and would constantly play with the printouts that they ended up so crumpled and worn. Each lesson has an average duration of just 7 minutes, so it didn’t tire or bore him.

If you would like to delay lessons for a bit so you can allow your child time to indulge in other activities, you can certainly do so. Stage 1 takes 3 months, but it’s okay to take as long as 5 months. Although it’s an undeniable advantage for your child to start reading early, it isn’t a race.

Can toddlers be readers too?

This review proves that they can! We may not have been trained by phonics instruction when we were young, but our children can certainly be. It may sound strange trying to sound out certain words, but it will be great practice with your little one. It’s an awesome feeling to have your child relishing reading a short book in its entirety with gusto.

I would just like to point out again that this isn’t possible if you’re not willing to spend at least 15 minutes with your children every single day. This isn’t a program that will teach your child to read without your input and participation. You have to play an active role in your child’s reading development.

Witnessing your young child reading is one of the most rewarding moments in life. It certainly was mine, and I can’t be happier with my choice of the reading program. Children Learning Reading is a legit program. If you’re committed, your child will be reading in no time.
